It’s true, a hen had a cow this weekend! I saw it with my own eyes. You probably think I’m crazy, and you’d be correct, but it really is true. Let me explain…
A hen, or hen party, is the European equivalent of what Americans call a bachelorette party. The group I performed for were mostly Europeans so it was a hen party. They had given up calling it a hen since most Americans don’t know what a hen, or the male equivalent stag, party is. I am very familiar with the term having spent time in Europe and having a penchant for British and Scandinavian crime shows. I’ve performed at my fair share of hen parties and I’ve noticed some differences.
The Biggest Difference
The biggest difference I’ve noticed between hen parties with girls from Europe or Canada, versus bachelorette parties with American girls, is that they tend to be more about fun and having the bride do crazy, fun-spirited activities. In this case, they made the bride wear a cow costume on one of their nights while partying in downtown Nashville.
While I didn’t get to see the costume live, I did get to see a picture and it was awesome! It looked like so much fun and totally out of the ordinary, yet seemingly perfect for Nashville. The party also made the bride wear a cat costume on the plane ride to Nashville which again, I thought was incredible. You know your bride and your party are going to be fun when she’s already wearing the purrfect costume and hasn’t even boarded the plane yet. 🙂
Don’t get me wrong, lots of bachelorette parties I visit are fun. However, as the hen party noted from their time downtown, a lot of parties here in town seem to take things very seriously. Perfect hair, makeup and dresses are common not only downtown, but at many of the parties where I am fortunate to perform. To each their own I say, however, I have to admit that taking the light-hearted approach like this hen party did, seems like a lot more fun. You have your whole life to be serious. You are out of your hometown around people you will never see again. You may never get a chance to spend time away with all your friends like this again. Have fun! Do crazy stuff!
I’m not saying all parties take things too seriously. Lots of parties dress down most of the time in Nashville but then dress up for one night downtown. That makes more sense, but to be honest, it doesn’t really fit the relaxed, fun, country atmosphere of downtown Nashville. But hey, it’s your party. Have it your way!
Great Hen Party
The party was a lot of fun. They ordered a Maxi performance and everyone participated and played along with the games and bits I like to do. There were actually a couple firsts for me during the party, which are rare considering the number of parties I do. That goes to show you how much fun they were and how they thought outside the box. They weren’t afraid the bride wouldn’t like or wouldn’t do what they were asking her to do. What they were asking her to do was in fun so she went along with it. That’s the way I think it should be. The stripper and his performance shouldn’t be about embarrassing her but about having fun with everyone and celebrating the occasion.
Another unique aspect of the performance was that the person who paid for the performance wasn’t in attendance. She was unable to make it so it was her treat to the bride-to-be. She went out of her way to make sure everything was taken care of and that the payment and tipping were all set up. That says a lot about her and I can’t thank her enough.
An Amazing Bride-To-Be
Let’s talk about the bride-to-be for a bit. She was awesome! She was so much fun and took everything in stride. She wasn’t afraid to look the fool, which in my opinion, made her look like a rock star. Of course, the games and gags I like to do are in fun and don’t make the girls look like fools. However, having the right attitude like this bride-to-be makes everything that much more fun. She played along with me and with the unique twists the hen-party girls threw in which made for an amazing time.
I want to say a special thank you to the bride. It isn’t often that a bride tips me on top of what the party tips. This bride was a total class act. To reach into your own pocketbook to give extra thanks is never expected. When it happens, it is very special to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I work my tail off for my parties because I want them to have a great time. I want them to laugh and joke and remember the party as one of the coolest things they did in Nashville. That’s pretty tough to do since Nashville is a pretty cool town.
I’m exhausted at the end of every night. Due to my performing style, I end up with new injuries seemingly every week. When a party, or especially a bride, appreciates what I’ve done for them, it makes everything seem worth it. It means more to me than I can put into words.
So I want to say a big thank you to the bride and to the amazing hen party this weekend. You made my night and you touched my soul. I wish you all the best and I hope the bride has an amazing, long marriage with her new partner. And that’s no bull. 🙂
